The text for Harry Partch’s composition The Letter comes from a letter that the composer received from Pablo, a tramp companion. Pablo’s lines are laid over a gentle ostinato, the Partch’s voice guidance tonality flux is committed and enriched by drops of the string instruments. Between the individual sections of the letter, short instrumental passages deviating harmonically from the ostinato are interspersed.
