George Benjamin wrote Sortileges especially for Paul Crossley, to a commission for Northern Arts with funds provided by the Arts Council of Great Britain. Andrew Porter from The New Yorker called it ‘…fresh, beautifully constructed, harmonically bewitching, and sensitively written for the instrument.’
