Tchaikovsky’s ‘Variations on a Rococo Theme’ for cello and orchestra were composed in 1876-77 and indicative of the composer’s love of Mozart and the classical style. The work’s original cellist, Wilhelm Fitzenhagen had an important influence on the gestation of the work (an edition of Tchaikovsky’s original version of the work edited by Raphael Wallfisch and John York is also available (EP7673)). This Edition Peters volume edited by Paul Grümmer contains a piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment and separate cello part.
