for Violin and 6 Voices
Utopie und Nähe (Utopia and Proximity) by Sidney Corbett is a 21-minute work for six voices and violin. The text is based on an earlier work by Ernest Bloch, Geist der Utopie (The Spirit of Utopia), written in 1916, in the middle of the First World War, as well as on short lines from the book of Job and Leonardo da Vinci. The book touches on cultural, social, political and other themes. But what attracted Sidney Corbett were Bloch’s recurring and ever-deepening questions about locating one’s being – who this perceiving entity actually is.
The Schola Heidelberg and Nurit Stark (violin) premiered the work under the direction of Ekkehard Windrich in Heidelberg on 11 June 2021.
This edition (EP 14563a) is the violin part of the work. The score (EP 14563) is available separately.
