South Carolina: The Palmetto State displays this unique state in three exciting movements. “Hurricane!” is intense, showing the energy of the natural disaster. It includes scales, octaves, full chords, written-out tremolos in the left hand, and dotted rhythms. A flowing middle section provides contrast. “A Morning in Congaree,” in D major, is flowing and expressive, displaying the beauty found in the national park. Light syncopation creates a lilting feel, and a brief chordal section shows strength. “Myrtle Beach Boogie” is full of excitement and swing rhythms. A boogie bass and bluesy melody include a variety of articulations and syncopation to produce an entertaining piece. “A Morning in Congaree” and “Myrtle Beach Boogie” are Federation Festivals 2016-2020 selections.
